The much loved Almbar in Hinterthal has had a much needed referb and extension.

What is great is the way they have kept the old character by literally building over the top of the old Almbar. So inside it still feels the same with the addition of new toilets, a much bigger kitchen and a further function room.

This week we did the Weichenthal Hut walk near Saalfelden.

It must have been the hottest day of the year 37 Degrees! when we finally arrived at the hut we were the only people, so we had our own personal chef cook us lunch! and very good it was too!

New Deinten Lift Complete!

Finally the last old long T-Bar has gone in Deinten! This has now been replaced with a new hi-speed chair :)

Hole in One!

Well what can I say, yesterday whilst playing in the local golf tournament I had a hole in one on hole 17!

Hole 17 is a 160m par 3, and we didn't realise it was in the hole until we got to the green and couldn't find my ball. There was just a pitch mark 50cm in front of the hole. We tentatively peeked in and there it was, followed by some ceremonial whooping, high fives, dancing etc.

It was made all the better as I was playing with Sascha, needless to say the rest of the day was a right off ;) + following tradition the whole club house had a drink on my account!

So after an average night sleep at 3000m some of our German room mates decided to get up at 5-45 to watch the sun rise. Great!

So day two - just the walk down to Hinterthal.

Königsjodler Expedition - Part 1

Well we spent the last couple of days climbing the Hochkonig - the hard way!

Known as the Königsjodler this is the longest via ferrata in Austria. Basically this is rock climbing with the aid of a fixed steel rope for safety.

Well that's it, the main lift in Hinterthal closed this weekend!

Considering it wasn't a great snow year in the Alps good old Hinterthal delivered yet again! We skiied a few diferent resorts over the last few weeks and with the exeption of the glacier none were a patch on Hinterthal for good snow and no crowds.

I guess it's time to get the golf clubs out!

Hi Carl,

I meant to thank you for your freerideskier web site a couple of months ago, but I was busy skiing!

I took up skiing 2 seasons ago at age 52 in order to have something to do while my son was out snowboarding. I took some beginning lessons that were just like what you describe in Kill the Snowplow. I tried desperately to control my speed and to make quick turns while using the wedge/snowplow technique.

I got NOWHERE. If a trail was even moderately steep, I would pick up velocity and no amount of "snowplowing" would slow me down. I felt like worst skier on the slope. I didn't mind that at first, but after a few ski trips where I made no improvement, it got discouraging.

I found your website while Googling "how to hockey stop on skis". I felt that if I could just stop myself when I needed to, then I wouldn't be such a danger to myself and others. I read about your low opinion of the snowplow technique and it described my experience exactly. It was great for learning to slide around on skis that first day, but on ice, or steeps or a narrow trail? The snowplow was worthless and it was VERY hard to break my dependence on it.

Your website had GREAT instructions on how to progress to a hockey stop, or what you call "controlled stopping" -- starting at the end and working backwards. I actually printed out your instructions and took them with me. I know that I looked pathetic pulling out my folded pieces of paper and reading them after getting off the lift, but so what.

I worked really hard on your hockey stop guide ("Kill the Snow Plow"). I couldn't figure it out at first, but I made a record number of trips to my local slopes and eventually got the feel of side slipping / edge controlled stopping. After a lot of tries, I was able to do a "fast turn" where I would end up sliding slightly uphill. I was able to STOP!

I worked on turning my feet faster and -- after many hours of trying -- I got it! I was doing hockey stops! Skis perpendicular to the fall line, upper body facing the fall line, as much edging and pressure as needed. I could stop myself on moderate steeps even if I had already built up some speed. I was so proud and thrilled, I wanted to scream.

Since then, I have been working on making good turns -- using edging and pressure to make aggressive turns and control my speed. During the winter of 2011, I went from a rather poor beginner to a decent intermediate skier. No one else helped me like you did and I can't thank you enough.

Since our Ski passes cover over 30 resorts we thought we would have a trip to Bad Gastein just one hour away!

Whilst the snow high up was great lower down, as always, Hinterthal is better!

In fact in Bad Gastien we had to take the gondola down at the end of the day as the lower slopes were closed!

This week a tragic accident happened in Hinterthal when a heavy lift helicopter working on the new ski lift was caught in a storm and crashed. Sadly the pilot was killed, accident investigators are trying to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Well golf fans, it was the last day of The Open and it was a good day for British Golf!

Lee Westwood came 2nd in the British Open with Paul Casy and Rory Mcilroy tied for 3rd!

On a smaller scale I also finish a golf tournament here in Austria playing my best round so far this season (11 Over - 44 Points) to clench the title!

New Lifts In Hinterthal and Hintermoos

The big news is the new link between Hintermoos and Hinterthal eliminating the need for a bus. This is a new Gondola and will go from the new base station at Hintermoos to the top of the Hochmais in Hinterthal.

At the same time they are building a new lift from the bottom of the Hochmais in Hinterthal right to the top (you used to have to take two lifts). This will be a hi-speed six pack.

Also where the two lifts meet a new 200 seater table service gourmet restaurant is being built.

All of these will be ready for the coming season.

Work has also stated in Dienten to build a new lift towards Mühlbach, replacing the old long T-bar - this will be completed for the following season.
